Cryopreservation is a process of maintaining biological samples in a form of suspended state at cryogenic temperature for considerable period of time and is used to preserve the fine structure of cells. Through this process, samples of cells, tissues, and organelles are cooled at very low temperatures (less than -2130F), for preservation. Cryopreservation is primarily used in the preservation of oocytes and embryos with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, prior to chemotherapy for women diagnosed with breast cancer, in order to preserve their reproductive capacity. The purpose of cryopreservation is to store cells indefinitely by halting the cell's metabolism with ultralow temperatures. The freeze-thaw process is stressful to all cells and tissues. Therefore, effective techniques were developed to prevent cell death and damage. Individuals or couples may choose cryopreservation to preserve fertility during cancer treatments or delay a pregnancy attempt until sometime in the future. The objective of cryopreservation is to minimize damage to biological materials, including tissues, mammalian cells, bacteria, fungi, plant cells, and viruses, during low temperature freezing and storage. When performed correctly and accounting for cell and tissue specific criteria, cryopreservation can provide a continuous source of tissues and genetically stable living cells for a variety of purposes, including research and biomedical processes.

For instance, in September 2019, ASKION C-line, of automated bio banking in the temperature range down to -185°C, launched its new technology ASKION C-line work bench (WB) consisting of a cryogenic handlings area (T <-100°C), which can be equipped with two (WB220), three (WB230) or six (aWB) controlled rate freezers. Inside the cryogenic handlings area a dry nitrogen atmosphere with ultra-low temperature is generated. This cryogenic environment enables to sort and/or temporarily store your frozen, by maintain the best sample quality of samples. The internal /external barcode scanners allow identification and tracking of samples at any time (barcode-based sample management). The optional controlled rate freezers guarantee to freeze down different sample formats in a defined and reproducible manner while recording all relevant data. The controlled rate freezing can be carried out by using freely programmable freezing curves.
