Persulfates are strong oxidants, have an excellent shelf life and are economical to use. Persulfates are essential components in many industrial processes and commercial products. Persulfates serve as an initiator for emulsion polymerization reactions in preparing polystyrenes, acrylics, polyvinyl chlorides and neoprene. It is used as a polymerization initiator in manufacturing synthetic rubber for automotive tires.

The most common persulfate compounds are potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate and sodium persulfate. Persulfate has applications in enhanced oil recovery, dispersants for toner formulations, ink jetting, and metal bonding adhesives and adhesive films; in many photographic applications, such as solution regeneration, bleaching solutions and wastewater treatment; in nickel and cobalt separation processes and the sizing of paper.
