The optical imaging market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.14% during the forecast period to reach US$4.032 billion by 2027, from US$1.808 billion in 2020.

Optical imaging is a technique that makes use of light to interrogate cellular and molecular functions in the human body, plant, and animal tissues. The information is deduced from tissue composition and biomolecular processes and generates images using photons of light from ultraviolet to near-infrared. Techniques namely, bioluminescence, fluorescence, diffuse optical tomography, diffuse optical spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, and multiphoton images, among others are various techniques of optical imaging. Optical Imaging is primarily used by researchers, bio-technicians, bio pharmacists to study small-animal models, and clinical applications for example detection of cancer, and lymphoma, the study of gynaecologic malignancies, vivo imaging, research on DNA, neonatal and adult brain imaging and other applications. Optimal Imaging reduces a patient's exposure to harmful radiation with the help of non-ionizing radiation. Optical Imaging is widely used in biomedical research and medical care.

An increase in biomedical, biopharmaceutical and medical research coupled with an increase in chronic diseases are expected to boost the market for Optical Imaging Market.

Optical imaging is an essential technique that provides useful information to researchers, pharmacists, and biotechnicians for studying complex human, animal, and plant models. Research in biomedical, biopharmaceutical, and medical care is contributing to the growth of the optical imaging market. Optical imaging is increasingly used in eye diseases. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that every day about 2000 US workers suffer from job-related eye injuries which require medical treatment. Novel optical imaging for accurate glaucoma screening is used for early diagnosis and treatment which can slow down or stop the progression to blindness. Vivo imaging, particularly whole-body Vivo imaging enables the study of animal models of human diseases that reduces the rate of experimentation on animals and provide essential information in research studies. Other applications of Vivo imaging can be seen in bioluminescence is used in microbiology and fluorescence methods in vivo imaging are commonly used in clinical research. Pharmacological studies use fluorescence molecular imaging to monitor therapy in the murine models of Alzheimer's disease.

New developments in optical imaging techniques for instance CT (Computed Tomography), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), and PET-CT (Position Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography) are widely applied in medical imaging techniques. Recent medical optimal imaging that is developed by biomedical research institutions and the community can now measure quantitatively endogenous and exogenous disease markers and spatial dimensions that can guide the clinician in deducing conclusions and arriving at decisions. 3D optical imaging and 3D display have been researched by researchers with their applications in medicine, robotics, security, detection, visualization, and display abilities. For example, 3D medical imaging is a new technology that can improve disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in a clinic and operating room. Optical imaging through imaging probes by the use of bioluminescence, chemiluminescence, afterglow imaging, and NIR-II probes having macro-mesoscopic regimes are new advances to study deep tissue imaging.

However, low penetration of optimal imaging, absorption and scattering issues, lacking clinical instrumentation and expertise are the reasons that can hinder the growth of the optical imaging market.

Key Development

Precision Optics, a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced optical instruments for medical and defense industries, acquired Lighthouse Imaging LLC which is a private equity company located in Windham, Maine, in October 2021. The acquisition strengthened the growth of both companies in the market.

Ansys, an engineering simulation software company acquires optical system simulation software company Zemax in August 2021. The acquisition was to provide end-to-end solutions for optics and photonics products in healthcare, autonomy, consumer electronics, and IoT. Additionally, Ansys provided solutions for simulating the behavior of light in complex products that included microscale, human visual perception, imaging of the physical world, and creation of optimal designs by streamlining workflow and communication among photonics.

Leica Microsystems acquired Aivia from SVision LLC which is a privately held company and leading AI-enabled 3D microscopy, image visualization, and analysis software solutions company, in March 2021. The acquisition expanded Leica Microsystem's innovation portfolio of Opto-digital solutions with the addition of AI-based imaging and analysis technologies.

Luneau Technology Group, a pioneer in optical technologies, merged with Optovue Inc, in September 2021. The merger expanded the comprehensive portfolio of health solutions to both the eye-care providers and also expanded their market base in the medical eye-care market.

During the forecast period, North America is expected to hold a high share of the optical imaging market

North America captures a high market share in the optical imaging market due to an increase in research and technological advancements, the surge in eye and brain diseases, cancer, and other diseases, and the presence of optical imaging companies such as Leica Microsystems, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Heidelberg Engineering Inc, Bruker Corporation and others have contributed to the growth of optical imaging market. As per the CDC ( Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) approximately 12 million people of 40 years and above suffer from vision impairment, including 1 million blind, 3 million facing vision impairment after correction, and 8 million people untreated in the United States. Major eye diseases include Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataracts, and Refractive Error. Brain Diseases mainly Alzheimer, Brain Tumour, Dementia, and Parkinson's Disease are resulting in deaths among people in the United States. Further, MRI Scanning is a technique used to detect images from the brain and deduce results. Cancer is the common reason for deaths in the US particularly brain cancer prevalent among men and women diagnosed with breast cancer. As per National Cancer Institute, estimated cases of cancer come from the US. Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) Scans aid in detecting cancer stages by describing the location of cancer, its spread, and changing function in the body. Further, 3D optical imaging, ultra-sonic sound-based optical imaging, and AI-based optical imaging are emerging technologies boosting the demand for the optical imaging market in the USA.

COVID-19 Insights

COVID-19 had a significant impact on the optical imaging market as the pandemic increased the demand for optical imaging to detect COVID-19 mutations. Optimal Imaging spectroscopy was used for primary screening of SARS-CoV-2 to identify the infection in patients, patients diagnosed with covid and asymptomatic individuals. However, the supply chain was restrained by physical restrictions nationwide leading to a shortage of optimal imaging devices specifically in developing countries.
