Biodiesel is a versatile renewable fuel used across multiple end-use sectors, including automotive, marine, agriculture, aerospace, and heating applications. The fuel segment dominates the global biodiesel market, accounting for nearly 90%. of total biodiesel consumption, with demand projected to grow at a CAGR of ~1.7% through 2034. This growth is largely driven by government blending mandates that require biodiesel to be mixed with traditional fuels, especially in automotive applications.

The automotive industry, a key consumer of biodiesel, faced setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic due to production shutdowns and reduced market demand, impacting biodiesel consumption in the short term.

Soybean oil, extracted from soybean seeds, is one of the primary raw materials for biodiesel production, accounting for 30% of global biodiesel production in 2024. North America and Central & South America are the leading consumers of soybean oil for biodiesel manufacturing.

Following fuel, power generation is the second-largest application for biodiesel, representing less than 10% of global consumption. Power plants utilizing liquid fuels are increasingly adopting biodiesel to reduce carbon footprints and align with evolving environmental standards.
