The GPU is a vital component for accelerating applications that require intensive imaging functions, such as 3D and 4D rendering software, video editing software, and computer games. It's a type of graphics adapter that can be either embedded in the CPU or contained within a separate electronic circuit, known as a discrete GPU. While a CPU (central processing unit) handles a wide range of general-purpose computing tasks, the GPU complements its architecture by performing a narrower range of more specialized mathematical calculations. A GPU is also capable of handling other complex tasks that require extensive calculations. These include displaying the desktop in the order it should appear on the screen, detecting the position of objects and their shadows, and using pixel shaders to apply various effects. The GPU can even decode high-definition video on its own, offloading the task from the CPU.
