Fumed silica is an amorphous form of silicon dioxide fused into branched and chainlike, three-dimensional secondary particles that then agglomerate into tertiary particles. It is called fumed silica as it is produced in the flame formed by the pyrolysis of silicon tetrachloride vaporized at 1500℃.

The three-dimensional structure of fumed silica gives it viscosity increasing and thixotropic properties. It, therefore, finds a lot of applications as a thickener and anti-caking agent. Fumed Silica is used for various pharmaceutical and industrial applications such as paints, coatings and pigments.
